Sew-Geek turned 10,
yes you read that right, 10 years of Sew-Geek. These past 10 years have been a wild ride.
The beginning
when I started Sew-Geek, I would have never thought that 10 years later I would be still making handmade geekery. Even thou my merchandise has changed, the heart of Sew-Geek was always handmade geekery.
I had just gotten out of a very toxic friendship, in which I had started an Etsy business and did all of the sewings back then. It was my awesome sister, that gave me the little push I needed to open my own Etsy shop. I was doing well, 2012 was also the year I had started to watch Supernatural. I really wanted Dean Winchester’s skull bracelet and decided to research and create my own.
in 2014 I started to paint messenger bags. I would make stencils on my little Cameo Silhouette and then hand pained the messenger bags. I loved those bags, then I was introduced to one of my now best friends, Pamela from Pamela Queen Glass, she introduced me to HTV and what a heat-press was. That also opened the door for T-Shirt designs and so much more.
The now
Over the past 10 years, my merchandise sure has changed from sewn baby items like bibs and burp cloth to T-Shirts, Mugs, and Jewelry. I still enjoy what I make, it’s getting a bit harder to keep up with trends. Also, there are so many more awesome makers out there. So it has not been easy. Advertising and putting myself out there is not always easy even after 10 years. But I always have to keep up with changes made on Facebook and Instagram, because their changes and making it harder for small businesses to be visible without spending a fortune.
I am grateful for every single one of my customers, who supports Sew-Geek.
To be honest, the last year has been very hard. 2020 was amazing, because of the Pandemic every one ordered online. Sales were amazing. But last year and this year sales have dropped drastically. I had a few times where I thought of not going on. But you, my customers, came to mind and that has kept me going.
The Future
I can’t guarantee that there will be another 10 years, but as long as I am having fun. I will keep going. I know my interests have shifted a bit. They are more Kpop oriented these days, but I will always be a geek. The goal is to make all my customers happy.
I started to make art again (I used to draw a lot, in a galaxy far far away…) so I am hoping to bring more art to you. Jewelry is a passion of mine, so there will be fun jewelry to come.
I also have another business DeadHeart apparel and I am waiting on the trademark office for that and then will also devote time to that. So Sew-Geek might slow down a bit, but I will be around for a while.
